About the safari

Why three days in Masai Mara?

Built for travellers with limited time, not limited standards

Three days is the shortest trip we build without compromising on what actually matters — enough nights to give you five real game drives, not a rushed single loop. It suits a business trip extended by a weekend, a first taste of Kenya before committing to a longer journey, or simply a traveller who wants the Mara done properly rather than not at all. What changes this itinerary from good to genuinely worthwhile is a decision most travellers don’t realise they’re making: fly in, and virtually all three days go to the bush; drive in, and roughly a third of your trip is spent on the road. Both are real, valid choices — this page is built to help you choose the right one for you, honestly.

Safari Highlights

What this itinerary actually delivers

Five private game drives across two full days in the Masai Mara ecosystem

A private vehicle and dedicated guide throughout — never a shared safari

Genuine Big Five country: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino where conditions allow

Choice of Reserve or private-conservancy basing, depending on your priorities

Sundowners, and a bush breakfast or dinner available as an add-on

Fly-in or road transport, with the honest trade-offs of each explained plainly

3 days masai mara game drive
Itinerary

Departing Nairobi in the early morning, the road route runs west through the Great Rift Valley, with a stop at a viewpoint overlooking the valley floor — a genuinely scenic, worthwhile pause rather than a delay. The drive continues via Narok, the last major town before the Mara, arriving at camp by early-to-mid afternoon after roughly 5-6 hours on the road. Depending on arrival time, a shorter late-afternoon game drive may be possible; otherwise, the first full game drive begins the following morning.

Drive time: ~5-6 hours
Flight: 45 mins
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Your selected Mara camp

This is the heart of the trip, and it’s identical whichever way you travelled to get here. An early-morning game drive departs as the light comes up — routinely the most productive window of the day for predator sightings. You return to camp for a proper breakfast and rest through the warmer midday hours, before heading out again in the afternoon, timed to be out during the golden light and into early evening. Your guide adapts the route around current wildlife activity and, where the conservancy or reserve rules allow, may extend or adjust timing to stay with a genuine sighting rather than moving on for the sake of a schedule.

Game drives: Morning & afternoon
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Your selected Mara camp

A shorter early-morning game drive is followed by breakfast and departure from camp by mid-morning, allowing enough daylight for the full return journey. The drive retraces the outbound route, arriving back in Nairobi by early evening — worth planning your onward international flight for the following morning rather than the same night, given the length of the day.

Drive time: ~5-6 hours
Flight: 45 mins
Meals: Breakfast

Why the Masai Mara — and Nowhere Else — for Three Days

Depth over distance, deliberately

With only three days, the temptation to add a second destination is real — and we’d advise against it, plainly. A second stop means a second transfer, which on a trip this short can consume half a day that would otherwise be spent on safari. The Mara alone offers enough ecological density — resident prides, strong leopard sightings in the right conservancies, healthy elephant and buffalo populations, and genuine Big Five country — that a focused stay here outperforms a rushed two-destination version of the same three days. If you have more time to give, our longer itineraries combine the Mara with Amboseli, Samburu or Laikipia properly; on three days, we’d rather do one destination well than two destinations poorly.

Is Three Days Enough for a Masai Mara Safari?

A direct answer, since it's the question behind this whole page

Yes — three days can genuinely provide a rewarding introduction to the Masai Mara, particularly when the itinerary is focused on the Mara alone rather than split between several parks. With two nights in the destination, the shape of the trip is straightforward: an arrival day, one full uninterrupted safari day, and a departure day. Choosing the fly-in option reduces travel time further, giving you effectively two and a half days of genuine game-viewing time rather than two. It is not the right length if a guaranteed migration crossing or several ecosystems are the goal — but as a focused, well-paced first or short safari, three days does real justice to the Mara.

Our Planning Note

“On a three-day Mara safari, we generally avoid adding Lake Nakuru or another park simply to make the itinerary look fuller on paper. Two nights focused entirely on the Mara consistently produces a more satisfying trip than spending a large share of it moving between destinations.”

Wildlife & Experiences

What you can realistically expect to see and do

Lion

Strong resident pride sightings, particularly in the conservancies

Leopard

Never guaranteed, genuinely possible with the right guide and timing

Elephant & Buffalo

Consistently present across the ecosystem

Rhino

Present in limited numbers — a genuine but not certain sighting

Cheetah

Regularly seen on the open plains, especially at dawn

Sundowner

An evening drink watching the sun set over the plains

Bush breakfast

Available as an add-on, set up away from camp

Cultural visits

An optional Maasai village visit can be arranged on request

Why We Offer Two Ways to Reach the Mara

Our planning philosophy, stated plainly

A three-day safari doesn’t give you unlimited time, so we don’t assume every traveller should get to the Mara the same way. For guests who want to maximise their time in the Mara itself, we arrange scheduled Safarilink flights from Wilson Airport. For travellers who enjoy overland travel and want the flexibility of a private vehicle from Nairobi, we arrange the full journey in a private Land Cruiser. Our recommendation depends on the purpose of the trip, your onward travel, your preferred pace, and how much of Kenya you want to see between Nairobi and the bush.

Fly-In By Road
Travel time each way ~45 minutes ~5-6 hours
Game drives 5 3-4
Hours actually on safari ~15 ~9-10
Hours in transit ~1.5 ~10-12
Character of the journey Efficient, scenic from the air Genuinely scenic — Rift Valley viewpoint, rural Kenya
Typical price difference Higher, reflecting the flight Lower, reflecting the longer drive

3 Days Fly-In Practicalities

What actually happens, step by step

Departure Airport & Airline

Flights depart Wilson Airport, Nairobi's dedicated domestic and charter hub — not Jomo Kenyatta International, where your inbound international flight lands. We arrange scheduled services with major local airlines which operates daily flights from Wilson into the Mara and currently serves eight major Mara airstrips.

Flight Duration

Approximately 45 minutes, depending on your specific airstrip.

Airstrip Selection

This is a detail worth getting right: the Mara has multiple airstrips, and the correct one is chosen around your camp, not simply "Masai Mara" as a destination. Landing at the wrong strip for your camp can add a significant, avoidable drive after you touch down. During planning, we always advise on the airstrip you will be landing- the one nearest to your camp/lodge.

After Landing

A vehicle from your camp meets you directly at the airstrip and transfers you to your accommodation, generally in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive.

Check-In & Baggage

Wilson Airport check-in is typically required 30-45 minutes before departure, with baggage limited to soft-sided bags — we confirm the exact allowance for your booking, since it varies by aircraft.

Schedules Can Change

Scheduled flights routing and timings are subject to seasonal adjustment. Rather than publish a fixed timetable here that could go out of date, we confirm the applicable routing and departure time directly with the airline when arranging your specific travel dates.

Travelling to the Mara by Private Land Cruiser

Not a cheaper version of the safari — a different experience

Your Vehicle & Guide

A private 4×4 Land Cruiser and a professional safari guide for the entire journey, not a shared shuttle — the same guide who takes you on game drives once you arrive.

Travel Time

Approximately 5-6 hours from Nairobi, depending on your specific camp and road conditions.

Why It's Worth Considering

The route runs through the Great Rift Valley, with a genuinely worthwhile stop at a viewpoint overlooking the valley floor, then on through rural Kenya via Narok — a real look at the country between Nairobi and the bush that flying simply skips.

Departure Time & the First Game Drive

An early departure from Nairobi generally allows time for a shorter game drive on arrival; a later start means settling in and beginning fully the next morning. We plan your specific departure time around this.

Luggage

Considerably more flexible than the fly-in option — a road transfer has no soft-bag or weight restriction.

Return Journey

The same route in reverse, typically departing camp by mid-morning on your final day to allow a full daylight return.

Fly in vs Road, Which Should You Choose?

Helping you decide how to buy this safari, not just whether to

Choose Fly-In If You...

  • Have only three days and want to protect every hour of them
  • Are continuing on to or from the Kenyan coast
  • Prefer efficient, seamless travel
  • Are arriving internationally and want a short safari that doesn’t eat into a tight schedule
  • Simply want the most time possible in the Mara itself

Choose Road If You...

  • Enjoy overland travel and want to see rural Kenya en route
  • Want a private vehicle from the moment you leave Nairobi
  • Prefer flexibility over a fixed flight schedule
  • Are travelling on a tighter budget
  • Don’t mind trading some safari time for the journey itself

Who This Safari Is For

A genuinely good fit for...

Time-Limited Travellers

  • Extending a business trip to Nairobi over a weekend
  • A stopover between other travel commitments
  • Anyone who can’t take more than a long weekend away

First-Time Safari-Goers

  • Testing whether safari travel suits you before committing to a longer trip
  • Couples or friends wanting a genuine but manageable introduction
  • Travellers combining Kenya with a longer trip elsewhere in the region

Who Should Choose Another Safari

Honest redirection, not a sales pitch

Travellers specifically chasing the Great Migration

Three days gives real odds, but not the buffer a migration-focused trip deserves — see our Great Migration Safari instead, built around 4+ nights in the Mara.

Anyone wanting more than one ecosystem

If Amboseli's elephants and Kilimanjaro views, or Samburu's northern landscapes, matter to you as much as the Mara, a 7-10 day multi-destination itinerary will serve you far better than trying to add a second stop to three days.

Honeymooners wanting a slower, more indulgent pace

Honeymooners wanting a slower, more indulgent pace

Families with young children

Five game drives in two days is a brisk pace for young kids — a longer, more gently paced family itinerary usually serves better.

3 days Masai Mara safari Customization

This is a starting point, not a fixed package

EXTEND YOUR STAY

Add a third or fourth night in the Mara for meaningfully better odds during migration season.

ADD A SECOND DESTINATION

Combine with Amboseli, Laikipia or Samburu if you have five or more days available in total.

ADD DIANI BEACH

Extend into a safari-and-beach trip with a few days on the Indian Ocean coast.

UPGRADE YOUR CAMP

Move to an exclusive-use villa or a higher-tier conservancy camp for a milestone trip.

PRIVATE CHARTER

Swap the scheduled flight for a private charter if your group size or timing calls for it.

Add-On Experiences

Optional, and genuinely worth considering even on a short trip

Hot-Air Balloon Safari

A dawn flight over the plains, typically followed by a champagne bush breakfast

Private Bush Dinner

A table set for your group alone, away from camp, under genuinely dark skies

Maasai Village Visit

A genuine cultural encounter, arranged respectfully through the local community

Photography-Focused Drives

Extra positioning time and a guide briefed specifically on light and composition
